“A pack of lemmings looks like a group of rugged individualists compared with Wall Street when it gets a concept in its teeth.” - Warren Buffet

Who I am.

Who am I and what makes me qualified to tell you anything about the world?

My name is Henry True. I am a Mechanical Engineer at the Colorado School of Mines. I have a minor in Economics and I am graduating this upcoming May.

I got into Economics for the same reason I got an Engineering degree. A borderline obsessive fascination with how the world works. Engineering tells us about physics and Economics tells us about society.

I believe any understanding of the world is incomplete without being able to see both.

Along that thread, I have always loved internet rabbit holes into anything technology or engineering and I love to share these niche things with friends and family. (They humor me. God bless them.) About a year ago, I started tutoring high school kids in STEM subjects. Which, over time, has revealed to me how much I enjoy teaching.

The inspiration for Exergy was as an outlet for these loves.

Why you shouldn’t trust to me.

Perhaps the most endearing quality about “hard sciences” when compared to “soft sciences” is that only the former can have a “right” answer. Hard sciences are ultimately governed by the unyielding laws of nature. Laws no one has yet figured out how to break (although I am sure the Chinese are working on it).

My goal with this project is to provide the math and fundamental concepts behind emerging technologies instead of just the number to the right of the equal sign. We can pretend numbers are objective but functionally that isn’t true. Assumptions and equations can, and often are, modified to change conclusions. Understanding this, I will aim to be as objective as possible. Additionally, I will provide the assumptions and equations, based on the laws of physics, behind the numbers I use to make conclusions.

Math is a repeatable process. So, my math can be repeated if the final number itself is important to you. I would never ask anyone to accept what I have to say on blind faith and ultimately we are all governed by the laws of nature. There is nothing you or I can do to bend them to our will. The proof is in the pudding, and I hope to be your spoon.

Why the Skeptical Lemming.

There is a myth about Lemmings that inexplicably they will hurl and follow each other off of cliffs. While not real, it represents a very real metaphor for modern day investment in new technologies. As Warren Buffet would agree, investors have a tendency to follow each other into harm without being fully informed. My goal is to provide conclusions based on physics and not Wall Street pitch decks to help you keep two feed on solid ground. Hence the “Skeptical Lemming”.

How to Get in Touch.

The mission to provide the numbers behind emerging tech will stay the same but the actual format of how I do that may change. If this stuff is interesting to you, I’d love to hear your feedback and thoughts on how I can make Exergy better. Big things or small I’d love to hear from you. Respond to any email from Exergy (they will be forwarded to [email protected]) or get in touch at 307-315-1650.
